Competitors at Audi Hamilton Island Race Week have tested their mettle in the Audi Longest Drive Challenge and the winners have come not from the leaders in the on-water struggle that continues at Race Week today, but from those who, apart from their sailing skills, have a strong competitive streak in the art of golf, a past-time a number of sailors excel in.
Those competing in the Audi Longest Drive Challenge had the added bonus of being among those to first test the new Dent Island 18-hole golf course, the latest addition to Hamilton Island owners, the Oatley family’s leisure facilities offered to visitors to the island.
Designed by Australian golfing great, Peter Thomson, the course is only championship island golf course in Australia which also boats 360 degree water views from every hole – it would be hard to beat.
Both male and female yachties tested their performances with Calloway golf clubs, described by competitor Steve McConaghy “as the best clubs around.”
Some yachties took time out from their sailing schedule to put in a bit of practice prior to the event, including McConaghy, but they were not counting on superior swings of the winners.
Robert McClure from the yacht Skyspirit won the Audi Longest Drive Challenge from Marhy Cayzer and Julie Pauletich – who outdrove the bulk of the field.
For his efforts, McClure will receive the use of an Audi vehicle for a week, a weekend in Sydney or Melbourne with the use of an Audi vehicle, dinner for two at ARIA in Sydney or Vue de monde in Melbourne, accommodation for one night at the Park Hyatt and an Audi Sailing Sport polo shirt and cap.
Second placegetter Cayzer will receive use of an Audi vehicle for one week and an Audi Sailing Sport polo shirt and cap, while Pauletich receives the use of an Audi vehicle for a long weekend, along with an Audi Sailing Sport polo shirt and cap.
The Crown lager Hole in One Challenge finished without a winner, but David Eagle from Skyspirit hit the target with two out of his three shots, so won the runners-up prize of $500.00 for the closet attempt. All in all, it was a good day for the Skyspirit crew.
Out on the putting green, the Crown Lager Putt Putt team winner was the crew from the yacht Silhoutte, who will take home $3,000 for their efforts.
There was something for the diehard yachties too. The Henri Lloyd Grinder Challenge, with the winners taking home a Henri Lloyd Biscay Coastal jacket.
Adam Jared from Dreamer took out the Men’s competition, with second place going to Tim Paul from Jaie de Vie and third to Steve Aaron from Evolution Racing. Erin Cheryl from Dekadance took out the Women’s from Lana Linden. |
